HARD CORE

I'm that round, bright little orange pumpkin
The one that you got in September
With the bent, gnarled stem
And the surface imperfections
But so firm a shell on the outside
And you watch me
Waiting for the rot to show through

You're the bright little pumpkin I got
Four months ago
When the air was crisp
And leaves revealed their colors behind the green
I placed you near me
So I could watch over you
And I hoped you would last longer than the rest
